Shahbaz
Sharif has done well during his tenure as Punjab CM. Rawalpindi, the most
important city in Capital’s neighbor, has a lot of problems and structural as
well as infrastructural flaws which, despite housing the strategic GHQ, Chaklala
airbase, etc., it has not managed to cope with it. Such a large populace of
this city depends on only Murree Road, thanks to the planners. The construction
of Chandni Chowk, 6th Road flyovers and various makeshift overhead
bridges on Murree Road is a big boost. But IJP road’s expansion or Rawal Road
construction has not helped much, because Murree Road’s surrounding areas absorb
most of the population of locals or settlers. This has put heavy load on the
city while the infrastructural and sanitation facilities remain the same.
Supply
of clean drinking water is thus a very serious issue that needs special
attention of the next election aspirant. According to a report the Technical
Assessment Survey of water supply schemes conducted the Pakistan Council of
Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has concluded that around 80% of water
supply schemes in all the seven tehsils of Rawalpindi are providing
contaminated water, which makes 1.496m people prone to serious diseases,
including hepatitis, jaundice and diarrhoea. Around 38 percent of the schemes
have not been functioning. As a result, nearly 60% of the total population is
not being provided water via the water supply schemes; 68 percent of the total
148 non-functional schemes have been temporarily closed, while 32% were
permanently closed.
Moreover,
this year Rawalpindi board’s toppers have so far been ignored despite Shahbaz
Sharif’s announcement of the laptops scheme for them. The students are waiting
for their turn, while other cities toppers have already received their laptops.
As election draws near, there should not
be further delay on part of the CM.
